1800 Iberian Devotional Brooch/Pendant
A c. 1800 Iberian devotional brooch/pendant, the center enameled with an image of La Virgen del Pilar, in a setting of silver with foiled black-dot paste and rose gold trim. The upper bow finial element, while from the same period and well-matched, is likely Portuguese in origin and a later marriage, due to it being set with minas novas quartz instead (tested).
The brooch can be worn as a pendant on a double-clip watch chain. It measures 57.8 x 31 mm and weighs a nice 21.2 grams. An amatory example of this design type is in the National Museum of Decorative Arts, Madrid (Inv. CE05852). For late 18th c depictions of La Virgen del Pilar, see 'La Virgen del Pilar' by Ramon Bayeu y Subias, c. 1780, as well as 'La Virgen del Pilar' by Jose Campeche y Jordan.
Condition: enamel surface of the center composition is no longer fully glossy; when held at a slant against the light, numerous scratches can be spotted. Back brooch pin is later added. Some age-related discoloration to the foiling. A small dent to the bottom corner of the enamel border. A vertical brooch pin may have been removed from the back at one point. Overall age-related surface wear and silver oxidation/discoloration throughout. Some wear and nibbles to the pastes.
Available now for only $1389usd + shipping payable via Zelle, Wise, Venmo Friends, or PayPal Friends and Family. Flexible layaway available upon request with a 20% non-refundable deposit.
